Why Remove EXIF Metadata?

Every photo you take with a smartphone or digital camera contains hidden metadata called EXIF data. While some of this metadata is harmless (like white balance settings), other fields pose a genuine privacy risk. iPhone photos, for example, embed your precise GPS coordinates by default — meaning anyone you send that photo to can determine exactly where you were when you took it.

What EXIF data can reveal

  • Your exact location — GPS latitude and longitude, sometimes accurate to within a few meters.
  • When you took the photo — Date, time, and timezone, allowing others to establish your movements.
  • What device you used — Make, model, and sometimes serial number of your phone or camera.
  • How the photo was taken — Lens model, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and other camera settings.
  • Identifying information — Software version, artist name, copyright, and unique image IDs.

When should you strip EXIF data?

You should remove EXIF metadata before sharing photos on public social media, in online forums, or with people you don't fully trust. Many platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) strip metadata automatically, but many others — including most messaging apps, email, and file-sharing services — preserve it intact.

How the EXIF Cleaner works

Converter.Plus draws your image onto an HTML Canvas and re-encodes it as a clean JPEG or PNG. The Canvas API only captures pixel data — it has no mechanism to copy metadata — so the output file is guaranteed to be free of all EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata. Everything happens in your browser; your photos are never uploaded to any server.

Step by step: remove EXIF data from a photo

  1. Open converter.plus/remove-exif-data in any browser.
  2. Drop your JPEG or PNG photos onto the drop zone, or click to select them.
  3. Click Remove Metadata. Each image is processed instantly in your browser.
  4. Review the summary — see exactly which fields (GPS, timestamps, device info) were stripped.
  5. Download the cleaned images individually or as a ZIP archive.
