How accurate is the background removal and where does it run?

When our server-side path is active, removal is powered by U²-Net running on Converter.Plus infrastructure — a state-of-the-art open model that delivers crisp results on portraits, products, hair, and complex scenes. If the server is unreachable, the tool transparently falls back to the @imgly/background-removal local AI model, which runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly + ONNX Runtime so your images never leave your device.

Why does it take a moment to start the first time?

If the local in-browser fallback path is used, your browser downloads the AI model (~40 MB) and caches it on first use. This is a one-time download — subsequent images start instantly because the model is served from your browser cache. When the server-side path is active, processing starts immediately with no model download required.

Can I remove backgrounds from multiple images at once?

Yes. Drop a folder of photos or add files one at a time. Each image is processed in sequence with its own progress indicator, and you can download results individually or grab everything in a single ZIP archive — ideal for product catalogues, profile-photo batches, and sticker sets.

Converter.Plus uses a state-of-the-art AI backend powered by the open-source U²-Net model running on our own Converter.Plus infrastructure — no third-party AI provider is involved — delivering high-quality background removal for portraits, products, hair, and complex scenes. If the server-side service is unreachable, it falls back to the open-source @imgly/background-removal library running entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly and ONNX Runtime. The output is always a transparent PNG, since PNG is the only widely supported web format with a full alpha channel — JPG and AVIF (lossy) cannot represent the per-pixel transparency a clean cutout requires.
