Why calculate compression savings?
Images are often the heaviest assets on a web page. Before committing to a format change or compressing hundreds of images, it helps to know exactly how much you stand to gain. The Compression Savings Calculator lets you upload any image, choose a target format and quality level, and instantly see the estimated file size reduction, load time improvement, and monthly bandwidth savings for your site.
What the results mean
- Original size — the actual file size of your uploaded image.
- Estimated output size — the size your image would be after converting to the chosen format and quality. Calculated by actually re-encoding your image in the browser for maximum accuracy.
- Mobile load time saved — how many milliseconds faster the image would load for a visitor on a typical 4 Mbps mobile connection.
- Monthly bandwidth saved — if you enter your monthly page views, the tool multiplies the per-image savings to show your total monthly data savings.
Which format should I target?
For most web images, WebP is the safest choice — supported by all modern browsers and typically 25–50% smaller than JPG or PNG. AVIFgoes further with 40–70% savings in many cases, and is now supported in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari 16+. If you need broad compatibility with email clients and legacy software, JPG remains a practical fallback.
After you calculate — ready to compress?
Once you have confirmed the savings are worth it, use the Image Optimizer to actually compress your images and download them in your chosen format. Or use the Image Format Analyzer to get per-format recommendations before deciding.
